You mean the possible threat of having VNC running permenantly and open to the whole wide world? Yes, thats definatley a danger. There are steps you can take to make it more secure.

Where are you planning to access this from? will you be using the same IP every time?

What time will you be wanting to access your machine? You can set up a schedule to run the server and stop the server on certain time-periods, so that undesired visitors only get a certain window to break it. And since most brute force attacks on passwords take several days to complete, this should reduce the risk significantly.

Make sure your password is OVER 7 charachters long, and includes numbers and letters, maybe other charachters as well. The casual hacker will not bother with a password longer than 5 chars long, because its not worth their time.

Re: Remote Access... Ultr@VNC or RemoteDesktopWebConnection?

I guess/hope this is a good place to add (if not please redirect me) a related question.
I think I see references to 'Ultr@VNC' and 'RemoteDesktopWebConnection: XPSP2' for 'remote access' in this forum.
I assume both work via cable.
Can someone summarize (or suggest a place that might) the difference/s... also what (including some other program if that may be the case) might be the best to use with XPpro with a cable connection and providing the greatest security (ie be the most secure)?

Beside Remote control program (of which I think Ultr@VNC represent the best), you can also use Windows XP pro Remote Desktop. It is a little more complicated and heavier on resources but it work well, you can give it a try.

Link to: Frequently Asked Questions About Remote Desktop - Microsoft.

It does not matter what you use, when you use regular home /soho equipment there is always security risk since ports has to be opened through the Router and or software Firewall.

Risk can be minimized by variety of “tricks”. As an example UltraVNC uses only one port as oppose to some of the others that use range of ports or few ports, long password that are changed frequently. Some people use SSH for the connection, etc.

I would not keep sensitive personal information or other important files on the hard drive that is left to be connected to from the Internet.

On the other hand most of us are Not big Banks or security Agencies that are tempting with thier content the Hackers. The probability that on the vast Internet with millions of open port some one will find your open port and then will spend days to break a long password in order to look into an unknown obscure hard drive, is what?
