    So heres the deal...

When I get an invitation on Messenger to give remote assistance, I get the
    following error message:

"Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote
host name could not be resolved. Please try again."

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 on one machine
and Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 on the other.

There are currently no routers connected.

So far on both machines I have:

    1.Disabled Firewalls
2.Upated Windows with Service Pack 2
3.Gone to My Computer Properties to ensure remote access is enabled
4.Edited the RAinvite and replaced the private IP with the Public IP.

None of these steps have solved the problem.

    Any Ideas??

does the other use have a firewall? did both users forward port 3389 on their routers to the internal IP of the pc that will be a participant of the remote session?

Thanks for the response. As I indicated in my post there are no routers and I have disabled all firewalls.

I haven't done RA via Messenger, but have via an E-mail Invite. I'd try that to rule out the Messenger.

We are both using Windows firewall and I disabled that on both PCs. Just in case I had her send a Remote Assistance Invite via Email so that I couild edit it. For some reason the IP in the Invite was still different from her public. Maybe that means theres still some firewall running.. maybe her Norton firewall.. not sure. but either way shouldn't it fix that if I edit the Invite and replace the private IP w/ the public.

software firewalls will not change your IP address. Sometimes cable and DSL modems have routers in them.. can you look into that?

I'll check into that. We both have bellsouth DSL modems. Is there any way to forward that port without knowing?? I have no experience with port settings.

Er..first you said you both were only using Windows firewall, now Norton firewall gets thrown into the mix?

As for the modem, look for a name and model. Bellsouth afaik does not manufacture their own DSL modems.

Also, ipconfig /all under cmd.exe on each machine will give you the local IP address. If either are 172.x.x.x (unlikely), 10.x.x.x(unlikely), or 192.168.x.x(likely) IP addresses, then the modem(s) have built in NAT and the ports must be forwarded.

halfin, dont know if you're networked at home, but even if not,you still have to go into network settings and "allow other users to access my computer
also, you prbly know this, but xp has its own fire wall that you'll want to turn off, wasnt clear wether thats the one you took down or not, hope this helps..

Actually, he did say he was using Windows Firewall and has disabled it. As for the other setting, I'm unsure what you are talking about, other than it doesn't deal with RA. RA isn't a networking device, its shared remote/local access.

:) AbbySue sent me an awesome PM explaining that Bellsouth modems do have a firewall built in:

AbbySure? LOL Oh well..CP still, after all these years spells it AbbeySue:D

To elaborate further..after logging in you have to go into expert mode where you will get a warning about the possibility of losing your connection if you make any changes. Go ahead and look around at the various options. If you are not confident about making changes, call BS tech support and they will walk you through it at no charge. Hope this helps.:)

Jesus you guys.. Thats incredibly helpful. thank you! Sorry about bringin up the Norton so late in the mix but it was the only thing I could think of that might have some kind of conflicting firewall built it. I'm gonna give this stuff a try and let you know what happens..

P.s. Gotta love the BS tech support.. I take advantage of that shiz every oppertunity i get :)

Okay guys.. So.. I called Bellsouth Tech Support and they told me "basically" how to forward ports. Like you said, I used launchmodem then selected expert, configure, and NAT. I used Define Custom Service to set the port range and what not. I'm a little unsure about what we did so let me run it by you guys.. For the Global Port Range they told me to put "3389 - 3389" And they told me to leave the Base Host Port blank (with a zero in it). Then we selected TCP Protocol, saved, and enabled it. Does this sound about right or is there something more I need to take care of  Also under Configure/Connection the protocol is PPPoE. woot :)
