    hey,

I have a bit of a problem, recently i was asked to do some computer work for a newly set up internet cafe because the previous "technician" was unreliable (not saying im much better!). The set up is just a normal star network connected to a router. however, the security cameras are also connected to the network and the owner wants to be able to access the cameras from his home computer (or wherever he is at the time) if the shop alarm goes off. He was talking about having a URL which he access and therefore put in a username and password to view the cameras.

hypothetically lets say the camera has the IP 192.168.5.16 and the assigned Public IP of the cafe is 157.54.0.1(i dont know the actual one yet...) anyway i was wondering how to do this i am at a loss. I do apologise for my ignorance if it is obvious. But are there any sites which can help me do this?

Here is a very basic set up of the cafe:

Thank you very much for your patience.

    Andy.

    Hey

What you need to do is this.
Based on the assumption that the owner has a program that knows how "talk"
with the camera, all you need to do is to configure your router that any incoming traffic on the camera port will be directed to the inside camera IP address. you can do it in the Nat settings.

    Good Luck

i see... but the problem is there is no program which talks to the camera unfortunately, the camera plugs straight into the switch and is assigned an ip address via DHCP. THe thing has no user manuals and has no company name.

THe camera is accessed locally by tryping in the IP address into explorer.

    cheers.

Sounds as if the camera has a web server app in it.. since you can HTTP to it and see the image. Maybe forward all incoming HTTP request to the cameras IP.

    or
put VNC & no-ip on an "admin" pc.. remote in and launch IE and browse to the camera..
