    Hi all,

Over the past several weeks, I have been having a couple of problems with my computer. They may or may not be related so I will post both here.

    1) Almost every time I start my computer from standby (and occasionally other times as well), I will get an error message saying, "This system is shutting down. Please save any work in progress and log off. Any unsaved data will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY (yen sign)SYSTEM.
Windows must restart now because the remote procedure call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly." It gives me a countdown of one minute before restarting.

I searched this problem online and most websites say that it is related to some worm/virus and they recommend using a specific worm removal tool and then installing a Windows security patch. However, in the instances of people actually having the worm on their computer, users say their computer produces the error message within 5 minutes of every boot and simply cycles through boot-error-restart, making their computers basically unusable. Yet, as I explained above, I mainly get this problem when resuming from standby. I ran the worm removal tool just in case and it found nothing, and I always keep my computer up to date on the latest Windows security patches so that's not a problem, either. Right now, I am not sure if this is due to a worm/virus or something else.

    2) My other concern has to do with a process I see running in the task manager. Several minutes after booting my computer up, there is a process called "svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE" running which begins to put, IMO, an unusually large work load on the CPU. The usage constantly ranges between 10-25%, which seems to be too high for a background process that I don't even know what it's doing. Again, I am not sure if this is due to a worm/virus or something else.

My machine is running XP and I have scanned my computer with AVG and Zone Alarm, both of which have found nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a fiber connection in an apartment complex. However, the problem has occurred at other locations as well. (It's a laptop I take to class and back).

As a side note, I just ran Process Explorer and it says that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is a service registered in that particular svchost.exe process so I guess the two problems are related somehow.

Ok, I went to Control Panel -> Network Connections. I connect to the internet through a wireless router so I try to delete the "Wireless Network Connection" icon but it tells me that I cannot delete it. Am I missing something?

i've read here (or elsewhere? ) that the svchost.exe is related to some other programs calling it up... one of the common ones is for windows update, does the process eventually go away? for stand-by, you may just have to disable it if you cant figure out whats causing the problem
