Remote software access

Is there a way to tell when someone has remote access to a software program?

I'm using Think Or Swim software, a JAVA based trading program and recently asked their help desk for support on a problem I was experiencing. They asked me if I could allow them access, which I granted. I assumed I would have to turn on the remote control access through the System Properties GUI, but before I knew it, they could see what I was seeing on the trading platform. The problem was resolved before I could ask them how they can do that.

My question is, how can I tell if someone is accessing my computer via a software program and how can I ensure that this is only done with my consent? How many other programs have this feature?

    Thanks in advance.

Looking through your firewall's rules should enable you to identify all programs that have been granted inbound access, but I'm really looking forward to hearing the experts on this as I often wonder how the heck Teamviewer on a USB stick somewhere on the internet gets me past the local router and firewalls and gives me unfettered access.

Sorry, not attempting to hijack - it's an important subject.

    Thanks Earthling.

FYI, I use AVAST for my firewall and I do see inbound connections from the web site. Also, under the Firewall -> Application Rules section, the Allowed connection settings for the software is for All Ports to be allowed for both Outbound and Inbound connections. For the firewall policies, it gives you the option of whether you want to set this yourself or for the program to auto decide. How do I know what ports are used for remote accessing my computer?

BTW, I see Apple, Mozilla plug ins, SuperAntiSpyware and other applications are configured the same way.

I haven't ever used any internet security suite that includes a firewall so can't advise on Avast's firewall settings. You could perhaps get some guidance from their support center or forum.
