Removable Disk function failure on XP

My work PC using XP (latest release with all updates) is now not recognizing removable disks, i.e. cameras and mp3 players.
They connect satisfactorily, and logo at bottom right corner is visible, but drive is not shown in My Computer, and therefore not accessible.
I’ve searched this and other forums, and have noted many suggested conflicts, notably Real Player, which I do not have.
Add New Hardware in CP is successful in finding the device, but has no affect.
I have installed a USB fix for an old Casio camera “WinSFX32 Self Extractor for Win32” – I’ve heard these can create conflicts!

    Any suggestions?

    Do you have network drives?

If you do than disconnect from it/them, plug in usb device, change driveletter and reconnect to the network path(s)

Did you see any conflics inyour PC ?
you go to System property-> hardwares->device. do you se any exclamation mark ? that mean hardwares have conflicts in memory address.
