I can't get my pc to auto login from the simple instructions given after installing .net. I have winxp home sp2.

I have tweakUI and that fails to work as directed. I don't want to login to my PC , that's it.

I do this on Run, control userpasswords2 and get the screen to change things.

If I uncheck the Users must enter a name ... on userpassords2 I am asked for a password for adminstrator which I enter in nothing. When i boot up again I get a error message which I forget exactly because i am not doing it again. Recently it just doesn't boot up at all and hangs!

I have 4 accounts and I do need to click on 'myname' account to get it to work as before.
I have administrator, myname, aspnet, guest in the list of usernames..

I need uncheck the Users must enter a name ... box and set what login to what passowrd exactly .

Just checking the auto login for tweakUI does nothing other than I get the same error message or it doesn't boot at all.

Now I didn't mess this up i just followed instructions and now i am getting a bad situation of failing to boot. I need EXACT instructions as this is obviously not simple and my PC is CLEAN of viruses/mamlware etc.

MS has really p##$*** me off.

    The non-registry way:

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.

Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts window in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not displayed. Additionally, users receive the following error message:
Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to see that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not exist, you must reinstall it.
    3. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click Apply.
    4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
    5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to close the User Accounts window.

    The registry way:

You can use Registry Editor to add your log on information. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    3. Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName entry, type your user name, and then click OK.
    4. Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, type your password under the value data box, and then click OK.

If there is no DefaultPassword value, create the value. To do this, follow these steps:
    a. In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String Value.
    b. Type DefaultPassword as the value name, and then press ENTER.
    c. Double-click the newly created key, and then type your password in the Value Data box.
If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows XP automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon registry key from 1 (true) to 0 (false) to turn off the AutoAdminLogon feature.
    5. Double-click the AutoAdminLogon entry, type 1 in the Value Data box, and then click OK.

If there is no AutoAdminLogon entry, create the entry. To do this, follow these steps:
    a. In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String Value.
    b. Type AutoAdminLogon as the value name, and then press ENTER.
    c. Double-click the newly created key, and then type 1 in the Value Data box.
    6. Quit Registry Editor.
    7. Click Start, click Restart, and then click OK.
After your computer restarts and Windows XP starts, you can log on automatically.

If you want to bypass the automatic logon to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after Windows XP restarts. Note that this procedure applies only to the first logon. To enforce this setting for future logoffs, the administrator must set the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    Value:ForceAutoLogon
    Type: REG_SZ
    Data: 1

    Hi,
This doesn't work as I knew this already. What I get is a make sure username and domain is correct but IT IS CORRECT

    I have username of andrew
    tpassword mexican
    group administrator

    these show up in regedit

I tried both ways with user2password and regedit.
I don't get an error about a helpfile.

What exactly is my login eg andrew or adminstrator, what is my group administror? and what eactly do i put for a password or doesn't that matter. I want full admin rights of course.

Why the f%%% doesn't this work as i followed all the instructions

    Hi!
I also know this already, but I gave the specific instructions posted by Microsoft just for your convenience.
I've been doing this for years and IT WORKS, it's not that invention!

I tried it on 4 different computers with different user profile schema and IT WORKS!

Anyway, I've never used Home Edition, but lots of problems I find on MG Forums happen on machines running Home Edition.confused

Look, why is your Administrator account without a password?
Log in to this account and set a password, I think this will do the trick.

Also make sure your "andrew" is an administrator, from the User Accounts screen in Control Panel.

Then when you uncheck "Users must enter a password to...", you'll be demanded to enter the password for your current account (which is an administrator (andrew), not the Administrator)

    Good luck!

My password needed to be set in control panel. I thought it could be set in userpassword2 after uncheck box.

Now it works so thanks for that as i had had it with this
