    OK...Dumb question maybe...

A few co-workers were discussing flash drives. And weather or not you really need to use the "safely remove hardware icon". And I was just wondering your thoughts on this matter? Anyone ever had any problems just pulling the drive out when done? Any benefits to using the "safely remove hardware" icon"?

    Thoughts???

You should always use the safely remove function. Often a thumb drive will still be active when you try to remove it, and can cause a loss of data if you don't make sure it is properly stopped. :)

i have been using my flash drives for several years already and not once has mine been corrupted as a result from forcing it out but it is recommended that you safely remove it (unmount it with the icon in the corner that says safely remove device) same thing in linux, you have to unmount it to ensure that there is a safe bet that nothing will be damaged, but in linux, if you don't unmount it and just pull it out, when you insert a different one in the same machine, it will display the contents of the drive you plugged in first because it thinks that the drive that you had earlier is still plugged in

windows can be unstable sometimes so it is really reccomended that you use that option even if it won't do much most of the time

I have seen the data all get changed to "RAW". Not fun.

I never use it and have never had a problem tho you should use it. However most of the time I have issues stopping the device it saying Unable to stop device or something.

Some times the drive IS still in use or you left open a file from it. But if I am absolutely sure that everything is closed down from the drive and it still is saying it is busy, then after a few times trying to do it safely, I will yank it. :)

If you want to be sure your files are okay, use the safely remove.
I've had computers tell me it couldn't be removed because it was in use, even though it appeared that it was finished. I waited and tried again in 5 or 10 minutes and then could remove it, so I assume some housekeeping that I was not aware of was taking place.

    Hi All,

TimW is correct. The warning is designed to help prevent you from removing the drive while it is active (Writing). If you are not sure when the drive is active then by all means use the Safely Remove device.

I never used to use it either, and I had all kinds of files and programs on it.

Then one day I plugged it in, and got a message, "Do you wish to reformat now?" Course I said no, but I couldn't open it for anything. "Format not recognized" or some such error message.

No problem, I try a different machine. Same result, on two other machines!!

I reformatted, :cry, now I remove ONLY after stopping.

    Lesson learned.
