Another question...I have used AVG free for a long time..currently using 7.5 My question is do I use the remove avg tool provided? And I am looking for an replacement anti virus prg as I dont want to move up to AVG 8.xx due to the problems I have read about. Is there a free anti virus prg that is as good and user friendly as AVG? I have read some on Avast but not being confident in my abilities, here I am at MGeeks. ALL recomendations are welcomed...remember user friendly is a must. Thank you

Yes, use the AVG removal tool to completely remove AVG and I wholeheartedly recommend Avast! as a replacement.

This is the setup I use on my computer and can say that I've been virus and malware free for as long as I've used it.

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!). And Windows firewall is more than enough with a router between your computer and the modem.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you all....IF I kept AVG...would i install from the pop up i am receiving from AVG to update now or d/l avg 8 and manually un-install 7.5 ? It's a little frustrating and confusing...I know my puter is only as smart as the person in front of the key board :)

I like Avira. Avast just gives Way to many false positives.

It's all a personal preference. I've personally never had a false positive with Avast! and it stays relatively silent while scanning and updating. I've tried Avira and I didn't like it because updating was a complete pain most the time and I found that it was always scanning the net --- something I don't think is necessary. (I tried it when I had dial-up about 2 years ago and other anti-virus programs never did this. Clogged up my already slow connection even further. Point is --- if other programs were not doing this, why was Avira and for what purpose?)

You could do that. Again, it's a personal preference. Avast! never pops up anything to update in that way. AVG keeps bugging to update to version 8, saying that version 7.5 is discontinued and will be no longer supported and has changed that end date constantly for over a year now. Bad practice if you ask me.
