I have a couple of PCs with windows XP installed that all of a sudden decided to use the classic logon mode instead of the usual graphic style. I tried running the group policy editor and disabling classic logon as well as enabling the welcome screen but it didn't fix it. Any ideas how to get this fixed ?

Both PCs are subject to "public use" so I'm not sure how or when this happened. I have downloading disabled and usually run spyware and antivirus scans every now and then so it probably wasn't any spyware or virus.

This has happened before to some PCs but I was able to fix it by using disabling classic logon and enabling the welcome screen.

You could try a registry tweak
Note-Make a backup of your Registry as a precaution in case something should go wrong.

    Start>Run>Regedit
    Find the Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    Then find the Name: LogonType
Right-click on LogonType and select modify
    Value Data: [0 - Classic Mode / 1 - Welcome Screen]
Modify the Value Name [LogonType] according to the Value Data listed above.
    Exit Registry and Reboot

I found the problem, Client Services for Netware was installed which forced the classic logon. Upon its removal the normal welcome screen appeared again.
