Removing Downloaded Folder From External Drive

    Hi,
    I was asked to get some 80s music for a party in a hurry, downloaded a 'NOW 80s' compilation and moved it to an external drive. On trying to access it on another PC, the folder contained four files, one of which was 3.2GB, the other three 16Mb. Their 'titles' consisted of a series of boxes.

    I couldn't delete the files. I get a message saying they are no longer in that location. I tried to move them to archive and delete the archive, but that wasn't possible as their were duplicate file names. I can't rename them. I think I must have then clicked on one of them. The folder is now 46Gb in size, full of folders and similarly named files, none of which I can do anything with. WIndows shows one as a system file. I have no idea what the rest are, certainly not 80s music anyway.

    When I try to delete, it says I need permission from 'Everyone'. I ran a registry edit program from How To Geek, aimed at allowing me to take ownership, but that's not helping.

    There's no evidence (yet) that the PC is affected. Windows defender isn't flagging any virus, but I guess that isn't what this thing is, whatever it is.

    Do you have any idea about what this is and how I delete/remove it?

    Sometimes it is just as easy as running the command from CMD. Open CMD then type rmdir /? for help.

    Thank you for replying.

    Revo and Geek uninstaller: how do I point them to the external drive?

    using CMD, I get:

    Sounds like file system corruption. Try running chkdsk X: /r substituting your external drive letter for X

    Get the manufacture's tools and scan it, could be a dying drive. You have other stuff on that drive, I'd move it and format the drive.

    Chkdsk /r did the trick. Was worried it was something malign so that's a marvellous result, thank you very much indeed.
