Removing duplicate files

Hey all.... I have two external USB drives (80gb and 100gb) that are full of pictures, wallpapers, music, videos, software downloads, PDFs, eBooks, you name it. Due to sloppy record keeping, they both have duplicate files. For example, the 80gb has the same video in 3 different locations, and this file is also on the 100gb in 2 different places. Luckily, the file names are the same (I think) so finding duplicates shouldn't be too tough. I looked through the drive utilities here at MG and found a few freeware duplicate scanners. Is one as good as the next or does someone have one they have used and recommend? Once the duplicates are taken care of, I want to sync the drives so they're identical; then I can reformat one of 'em. So, any suggestions on a free sync tool?

    Thanks!

BTW- both drives are storage only and have no OS files, so there is no danger of deleting crucial system files. I once ran a duplicate scanner on drive C and there were many system files listed, so I just exited without making any changes....

One I have downloaded lately and used is DupKiller 0.8.2 from

I used it to get rid of duplicate jpg files. It worked for me. ;)

A tip. Search on one drive at a time first up, and get rid of duplicates in each drive. Then search on both drives together, otherwise you will be overwhelmed.

Hi bazza! Thanks for the recommendation. I saw Dupkiller and several others and figured I'd ask if anyone had any opinions or if anyone had used one and what they about it, so thanks again.
Yup. That's the plan. I think it's going to be a day-long project; it's about 160gb total if I combine both drives, but after killing the dupes on both drives, and syncing 'em, it should be around 100gb, maybe less. I'm hoping to free up one of the drives completely when I'm done. Any ideas on a good sync utility?

You're welcome, dlb. :) As for a sync utility, I haven't got into that aspect yet, but soon probably. ;) I will be interested in what program you decide upon, though. Bazza

Well, I ended up using Glary Utilities. If you haven't checked it out, give it a look. It has a temp cleaner, startup manager, registry utils, duplicate finder, file encryption, and LOTS more. It's totally free and so easy to use that most children could safely use it. I gave it 5 stars. It has become a permanent desktop addition :cool

Thanks dlb for the headsup. :cool I downloaded Glary Utilities back at the end of March but never got around to trying it. Will give it a try. Bazza
