removing duplicates

Can any one recommend a good application (free or otherwise) to find and remove duplicate files( i have got 1000s) from my external hard drives .

I have got Vista manager that has a duplicate remover but it does not seem to be able to cope with the sheer volume, it runs for hours but just does not get the job done.

Was a bit scary for me with the duplicates!! With your know how it should be a breeze..

I am like Augie i have a lot of things in my head but the problem i don't remember what (or where)they are.
