Ive got an hp a1630n and was thinking that removing the front panel might be a quick/easy/cheap way of improving the airflow of the case. Is there some reason why I really shouldn't do this?

I'm not sure removing the front panel will achieve much at all. If removing a panel then in my opinion, choose the side panel. However, air will go into the box, if air can get out. If all your fans are working, then make sure you've got at least 9 inches of space between the box and the nearest wall/partition. The less obstruction of the exhaust, the cooler will be your machine. :)
