Hi, I have tried several shareware programmes for ridding browser usage and site visits, but having tried Ghost surf, Privacy Inspector, Geek superhero, East Tech and a few others, I am unsure which gives the best value for money. Could anyone give me a technical response as to which gives the most comprehensive security?

    Thanks

Hi There - In W98SE I use a batch file after booting into DOS which deletes all the relevant index.dat files plus temp I/net files in one quick swoop. When windows boots up the index.dat files are recreated with zilch in them. You can of course delete the temp i/net files in IE6 which just leaves the .dat files. There is also freeby called Spider which will kill the dats on reboot. But I far prefer the batch commands using DOS. Not sure about XP though - I am sure the experts on here can come up with other solutions also.

Yup. And so far, in my experience at least, it's the only cleaner that does that.

Actually I'm not sure that it does clean the Index.dat file - this option appears to be greyed out in my version of CCleaner 0.9.057 :(

However, I also run MRUBlaster which also cleans the Index.dat and a few more things that CCleaner misses: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4184.html :)

Just found that the greyed out options are checkable! Wow, how unintuitive. :(

...and I've found I cannot reedit my post as well :(

Agreed maxwell, I wish there they'd give me a little more time (like an hour or better yet, a day) to change one of my posts that was in error or just plain dumb.

:) At least give us 10 minutes to fix up something we may have stuffed up and missed after using the preview post, as well. Sometime we have second, and better, thoughts on a solution or suggestion Bazza

I downloaded CrapCleaner today. As usual I over-researched the index.dat removal utilities. I seriously considered using Steven Gould's CleanUp! (recommended by bigbazza) because it has an overwrite option for secure deletion. But I chose CrapCleaner - it gets lots of 'thumbs-up' from the geeks around here including MA.
There sure is alot of hoopla around the 'net over index.dat being so well hidden by M$. Everyone from the paranoid 'Microsoft haters' to software developers and freeware authors have plenty to say about it.

Anyway, those bloated files are gone now and it was educational!

Wow! Just peekin' around and found bigbazza's 2 killer links to some VERY powerful cleaning tools. I installed and ran them in a few minutes. Totally easy for even a fairly non-techie dude like myself. Everything went real smooth and 639 files showed up with Emptemp. Now that crap is all gone too. Wow, again. My little sys has never been so squeeky. Thanx for those really great tools there, big fella!

Zimpal, use them both, check out earlier post on this thread. All 3 recommended catch some that each other miss. believe me , they do. As I said I run all 3. I remove index.dat using a batch file in W98 as the Irish say, to be sure, to be sure. Baz
