I want to remove a pc from our Windows 2003 Small Business Server network. The last time I tried it with a different pc I got locked out and don't want that to happen again. This pc is running WindowsXP. What are the steps to do this successfully? The pc would be used at home and not connected to a network or the internet. No password log in would be all right.

    Thanks,

Disjoin the domain. Do you have the local admin password?
Right click My Computer, select Properities, under the Computer Name tab click Change - create a workgroup name for it.
It will want to reboot to complete. Youll need the Admin password to log in again.

When you say local admin password is that the password for the server, or any admin on that pc? I can make a new administrator on that pc and a password for it. Will I be able to access the pc with that administrator and password? If there was an administrator for that pc before going onto the SBS network I don't have that.

If you can create an admin account you must be an admin. After you disjoin the domain & boot up you'll CTRL-ALT-DEL and there will only be user name & password fields. Then you can go to run & type control userpasswords2 and uncheck must use password, put in your admin user and ok. Next time you should boot to the desktop.

Heh, on top of that, when logged on, disjoin the computer from the domain, and while ye are at it, change the local admin password, if ye are afraid of not knowing it. :)

I've ran into issues, in the past, where I dump the computer from the domain, then I had to resort to other methods to get back into the computer. Learn from my mistakes, and change the password BEFORE rebooting. :)

Thanks to both of you. I have it done and no problems. I left the passwords blank so no problem logging in anymore. I was worried about getting locked out. Last time I did one I thought I knew the password, but something went wrong and I ended up reinstalling the os. PC was like new after that at least.
