I am giving a neighbour an old PC which I no longer use. OS is WinXP. What I want to do is remove all my personal files which are in Excel,Word and Paint Shop Pro, but keep the programs intact so that the new owner has full access to all programs.
Any suggestions how to permanently remove just the files?

    Thanks

    I use this http://majorgeeks.com/Eraser_d4221.html
First I add/remove programs I don't want. Then I erase personal files and erase the recycle bin contents. Next I defrag and last I erase the free disk space on the hard drive.
This program gives you the choice to erase with 1,3, 7, or 35 passes.

    (1) Run 3 separate searches for all files with .doc .xls and .psp extensions:
(Start > Search > For Files or Folders...)

    (2) Move all files found on the hard drive (during each search) to a folder on your desktop.
*Note: Remember - do not 'copy' them - 'MOVE' them to the folder on the desktop!

    (3) Download and install the freeware program called Eraser

After the installation is completed, an 'Erase' option appears on the Context Menu of Windows Explorer and Recycle Bin. You can then simply use the convenient Windows Explorer extension and erase the folder by right clicking and choosing the “Erase” option. Or you may also drag and drop files and/or folders onto the on-demand eraser.

    Good Luck!

I use absolute shield file shredder. It basically does the same thing as the other apps suggested above.

You can download it free http://www.sys-shield.com/fileshredder.htm there.

Does anyone have any comparitive knowledge as to which shredder is best?
