I want to remove programs in program files, how do I find the wording string that I also need to remove in the registry? Particularly , but not limited to : reviversoft.
I'm not educated in computers and have dial-up, wanting a manual method, not another program. Thank you for considering this.

You say your not educated in computers so I recommend you stay away from the registry. Major Geeks recommends the registry cleaner in CCleaner to clean up after uninstalling programs. Major Geeks also recommends Revo uninstaller to remove unwanted programs. If you aren't familiar with the registry, don't go there unless someone here is helping you.:wave

Welcome, the manual method is just that - manual. Open Regedit and use the Search function, it's long-winded and boring but, if you know what you're doing, it's probably the safest way.

There's supposedly some discussion of manual removal of Reviversoft here, my Security doesn't allow me to visit the site to check though.

Satrow : If your security doesn't allow you to go there...why do you recommend this link?

Oneeyedjack : NO I'm not cutting the deck for hard drives...Another post says there is search feature at regedit...in plain eyesight as usual...Thank you all, back later to report on my success...

Whether you visit the site or not is your choice; it looks like it's at Reviversoft in a discussion area. Here's the Google cache version of the page,

Typically the uninstall portion is located:

    HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall

You may/will have a ton of entries. For my example I will use ccleaner.

Clicking the ccleaner area I get a bunch of keys on the right hand side.

    One of them is:

    UninstallString with reg_sz of "C:\Program Files (x86)\CCleaner\uninst.exe"

Now, at the "run box" or windows key + R, copy what is in that key to there, and uninstall.

You can also use ccleaner to uninstall apps. ;)

OK I installed ccleaner, Don't know what it did except comp is quik, dialup is slightly quicker. Program selected choices, haven't tried manual program delete yet.

I have a 8-9gb restore partion for XPsp2 on my 200gb harddrive, also a utility copy on 3 dvd-r's. I had used the xp feature of returning comp to original after I made dvd copy. I lost "my downloads" & music. Think its in the hardrive as itune "typed heading topics" flashed by during transfer.(?) Like these back.

Should I reinstall discs before starting program cleanout ? I have uninstalled dozens like msm, outlook, video p.'s. Would I be better off using Linux OS instead of MS OS for dialup

Hi!! I have a dumb question. Why are you reinstalling Windows, and then uninstalling every thing.I don't really understand what your trying to do. I think your trying to pick up speed. That's not going to happen with Dial-up. Maybe if you explained a little more what your goal is someone could help you better. There are a lot of smart people here. :confused

    Hi

I would make sure your XP is at lastest Service Pack which is at SP3 now, its not a quick download sadly for those on dialup but if you have a kind friend on broadband then ask them to download the full version HERE for you (its an exe so just installed at a double click).

In most cases the registry is not needed for removing old components of applications, the uninstaller does most of that, coupled with maybe a CCLeaner run of the registry cleaner component, as mentioned.

CCleaner wont really speed up your internet, it maybe that as CCleaner deletes your temps and cookies that a large amount of temp internet files where slowing you down, so run the Cleaner part of CCleaner say every week to clear the temps out.

Yes uninstall applications you dont need as that can speed up your PC a bit as many applications add startup entries that eat CPU and RAM, many like the startup addition of MSN Messenger, Quicktime Udpate, Java Update etc are not needed.

As for installing Linux, its not something you would wish to jump into right away as its not for everyone, while many of the distros are more user friendly out of the box, you will not be able to run any of the Windows bases applications you may like as they are not compatible, you may find Linux versions that are the same as in Open Office is a comparitive of Microsoft Office.

Drivers maybe an issue with Linux on your PC, depending on the hardware used, so if you are not medium PC savvy then personally I would urge you to stick with Windows, I do have Linux as in Ubuntu installed myself but my PC hardware is very current so drivers are out of the box.

Thanks again for your help. What I want to accomplish is just the programs I will use, eliminate all theMS "engineered complications".

I use offsite email , music ,kijiji, never video or utube, but will READ similar topics , no flash crap dancing around my screen while trying to read the info...hold still damit!

I will work with RS topics, mapping , lidar/radar ; environment type hobbies. So large files will be needed downloading/creating sat. images and the like. Global thinking is switching from secret spy on you issues to public inputs for the well being of our earth. Use the sats for good.

I c- cleaned registry out too, 180 listings, what the program recommended. (since last posting). Sure like the access for editing etc in one file and visible, feels like progress.

I had restored to original so I lost sp3 (current is sp2), but I have this on 3 dvd discs...in theory, also in a 8+gb partition in the c drive. I don't know what is contained in these topics, in theory lots.

I had many issues with xp sp3, backups never worked or restores (hence back to original). Could not change startup programs, no matter how may or types of accounts created. Got it down to 68 from over a hundred, ccleaner appears to have narrowed that sharply since. A while back xp sp3 version tricked me into a password, xpsp2 doesn't have one. Since the password install I've been locked out many times on the xpsp3 version.

I have norton 2011 a paid edition, had downloaded a free trial of N360 after , deleted that quik over demanding popups & ask.com crap.

Not knowing computers I downloaded a few programs for music like bearshare & another hijacker (the need to search out crap cause I don't know the names). NO says friends after the fact...if can't afford to buy music copy library cds. Hard to figure who's hiding in my computer now.

Now that I have cclean I have more confidence in dealing with the MS runaround (go ahead and find sp3 in MS download site....if someone finds that isn't BS them you must be Gates cousins!)

What should I do to recover lost downloads that are in (theory) in the backup dvds ? All but itunes music can be replaced, just slow downloading & interrupts. Don't want MS password control BS.

Just to be clear, I think I'll be OK with ccleaner, quite a relief cleaning out the mess I created / bought..
    Thanks all.

Hi!! Well you sure explained what you want to accomplish. I'm sure you will get further suggestions from those that know.

I can't believe you had over a hundred programs in start up. 68 is still a lot. I have 3 programs in start up, and they are all security related. It must have taken a long time to reboot with that many start ups and I can't image the resources you are wasting. I have 33 processes running. This is a little beyond my expertise, so I'll just watch your thread and see what the experts recommend. It's very interesting.

Well for that you'd have to try a Linux distribution or go Apple OSX (Apple route will need a Apple computer).

Complications in Windows computing is not really in majority of cases Microsofts fault, if you where to clean install Windows and nothing else, you would likely have no issues at all, its the 3rd party applications that in some cases do not follow Microsoft programming guidelines or applicatons that are installed that have a knock on effect with others that are the issue.

    No that is good.

Very likely some other application or malware caused the issues you had then, the choice is yours if you wish to install SP3 or stick with SP2. I would need to know the exact type of password you are referring too as in many cases Windows expecially NT, XP and above can start asking for a change of logon password and thats normal, in part it had somethingto so with one of the .NET versions and a quick cure HERE fixed that.

Do not install two Antivirus applications at once as you are only inviting issues from slowness of PC to random weird crashes and errors, so was the Norton 360 installed at the same time as your Norton 2011, if so then it maybe wise to fully uninstall all Norton products and run the Norton Cleaner Tool HERE then re-install your Norton 2011 as reminents of old applications can cause problems and Antivirus applications are prone to this.

Do you still have Bearshare or another P2P application on your PC?

CCleaner has just remove in likelyhood alot of junk from non Microsoft applications, sadly not Gates cousin and while I do know alot of folk at Microsoft I'm also a staunch critic of theirs aslo, especially in developement of what next generation Windows is going to include or not.

If you haev your downloads whatever file type or application they are, you just copy them back off DVD if they are a file like music, pictures etc to a folder of your choice on the C drive, My Documents and Music, Pictures etc are logical places. As for applications you wish to re-install that are on DVD just run their setup file for them off the DVD to install.

To add some further checks attach a list from CCleaner of your Startups and we can advise whats not needed, instruction below

Then once you have unsinstalled all the applications you dont want, and installed the ones you do, run a CCleaner cleaner, then defrag your PC and the Windows defrag is ok or use something like IOBIT Defrag HERE or Ultra Defrag HERE suggested these two as I'm mindful as to you being on dialup and the speed of dwnload you have so not trying to suggest a application that I would have normally in O&O defrag 14 free thats 14mb in size.
