Removing Sound Drivers/Problem with safe mode

I am replacing my Creative 16 bit PCI sound card, and in the past when I uninstalled the drivers, the uninstall process would freeze, and I had the feeling that there might be files left over. (If someone has other solution to this than the one I am trying, please suggest).

Now, I've decided to go into safe mode to do the uninstall, because I believe the reason it did not work before was that some files were still in use. However, whenever I go into safe mode, the logon screen appears, and as soon as I click on it, the computer restarts.

What is the problem?

Windows XP, Home with SP1.

BTW, when I logon, it displays two accounts: mine (which is admin), and administrator, which is puzzling. I tried both accounts, to no avail.

I am running Zone Alarm (not pro), added information in case this is causing problem.

 

Are you still able to log into Windows normally ? Or does it restart like it does when you try to enter safe mode ? If you can still get into Windows I would try reloading the drivers - reboot - go into the control panel - click on administrative tools - look for any Creative process running, if there are disable them - After that try the uninstall again.

If you cannot get back into Windows, with the PC off and the power cable unplugged from the back of the PC. Remove the PC case and remove the sound card. Then see if you can get back into Windows. The reason why I suggest this is for the simple reason that hardware does fail and can cause you're motherboard to go haywire while the troubled hardware is still installed.
