Removing Unneeded Files?

Hi everyone...this is my first post on the Major Geeks forums, so I hope I'm putting it in the right place.

Over the last couple of days, I've been getting temp files that won't delete with my regular "cleanup" utility because it says the files are "in use". They seem to be related to Java (Sun) of which I believe I have the latest version.

    The files have the ending
    \Temp\jusched.log

    and the name

    JETx.tmp

I have read that these files are harmless, but since I formerly did not get them, I wonder if there's a way to prevent getting them, or failing that, a way to delete them?

    Thanks,

    Mariam

Further to my previous post, I just installed CCleaner and was delighted to see it remove a whole meg of temp files with no problems removing the meg of temp files and no problems afterwards with other software.

However, I still have the two types of files that I mentioned above, plus cookies which do delete very easily.

I can tell my usual cleaner to "ignore" the JET files, of course, and I know they are nothing to worry about. Still, I don't know why on earth I'm getting them. It's only been happening since the last Microsoft critical updates.

The only thing different that I did in the meantime was to try to run one feature of Roxio Easy Media Creator 9. It did not work as I thought it would (probably something on the website I was trying to download from), so I deleted all the files I'd downloaded (podcasts) since I no longer needed them, plus I deleted the CD projects that corresponded to them. That stopped Roxio from adding temp files, anyway.

Thanks again and best wishes to all,

    Mariam

    Hi Mariam

Reading your post in the CCleaner thread and as I was reading up on Citrix as I need to use it for RDP soon in work I came across this that may help with those Jetx.tmp files or more so what they are http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;187629 so if your using your PC on a network or remote desktop, then those files are created due to that ( even tho MSKB states NT4 it will be same for other NT versions as in XP and above )

The doc I was reading was this http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX105618&searchID=-1 that linked to the MSKB artical above

Many thanks, Halo.... I don't know what is wrong, then. I'm on an ISP called ATT.NET, using my home computer (Dell Dimension E510 running XP). If the ISP is my "network", maybe it's the problem, but I don't think I'm operating a "remote" computer, unless it is somehow linked to some computer somewhere else (and if it is, I'm in deep trouble!). I examined everything with Norton antivirus, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy--no threats.

I just started getting these files on Aug. 29, when I attempted to get a Microsoft Update. My Updater was not current at that time, but Microsoft Update said that "a problem had occurred" so it would not give me anything but the critical updates on its "Express" function. I allowed my computer to be updated with that function.

Today, wondering if perhaps my Updater was out of date, I re-downloaded and reinstalled the Updater, and it gave me about 11 updates. I did take one optional update relating to remote computers that I had not taken before, so maybe I should uninstall that update?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Best wishes,

    Mariam

One of the Microsoft technicians advised me that JETxxxx.tmp files can be deleted while in safe mode. However, they do tend to come back on restart.

I have discovered that the JETxxxx.tmp files and the ~ROMFN files are related to Roxio Easy Media Creator 9, while the "jusched" files are related to Java Automatic update.

In any case, none of the abovementioned files are harmful.
