hello guys got a small problem. when i right click my desktop and select new then text document,
once i've created the text document and try to rename it by right clicking it and selecting rename
i get an error box saying if you change a file name extension, the file may become
unusable are you sure you want to change it? if i select no then obviously the new name cannot be implemented but if i choose yes
then, although the name of the text document has changed, for me to open it another box appears asking me to choose
which programme created it also i have to choose from this list every time i want to view the file
i don't want to change the extention just the name.any idea how i can rename the text document normaly
just by right clicking the file and selecting rename?
    thanks guys

    Greetings, alex60...

Open Windows Explorer > Organize > Folder and search options > View...in the Advanced settings section, make sure 'Hide extensions for known file types' is checked, and 'Ok' out of Windows Explorer.

You should now be able to rename files normally...

Although the change in your Windows Explorer view suggested by Caliban works, it was not necessary. All you needed to do was only change the filename, not the file extension. In other words, when you right click and select Rename (or just hit F2), the filename appears highlighted; the extension, .txt, is not highlighted. So, all you need to do is type the new filename; do not type the extension because it's already there.
