Renaming A Portableapps.com Flash Drive

I have a flash drive permanently plugged into my laptop which is invaluable in emergencies as it can boot any of Macrium Reflect, Partition Wizard or Puppy Linux without starting Windows and without needing any access to or writing to the hard disk. Unfortunately, as it also had 4GB free space, at some point I also installed PortableApps.com to the same drive and in the process it indelibly renamed the drive to PortableApps.com. If I rename the drive in File Explorer it still appears as PortableApps.com, and the same if I rename it in a disk manager such as Partition Wizard. As I have a separate PortableApps.com flash drive now I need to make this name change stick. Does anyone know how?

Copy the contents of the flash drive to a folder. Format the flash drive and ensure you name it before the formatting starts. Copy the files from the folder back to the flash drive.

I'm a bit reluctant to try that Eldon as I'm expecting the drive may not boot afterwards. It has Grub4DOS installed into whatever equates to a MBR on a flash drive and it's that that enables it to boot Acronis etc simply from ISOs stored on the drive. However as I can't find a way simply to change the name and nothing else I may have to risk it and hope I can reinstall Grub4DOS successfully afterwards. But I'll hang on a bit in the hope someone can advise me on editing the drive name directly.

I can't help with renaming the drive directly but, what i do with flash (pen/thumb) drives is label them on the outside with a Sanford Sharpie. I know what's on the flash drive before I insert it in the USB port.

Open the drive and edit the autorun.ini file by changing the label.
I just did and the change only took place after unplugging and re-inserting the flash drive.
