    Hi.

In trying to rename some files on my computer, access has been denied to me quoting that 'the disk may be full' (it is not); 'the file may be in use' (it isn't); or that it may be 'write protected'.

If it is the third option, I certainly didn't protect it myself so can I change this setting in order to rename them?

    Many thanks.

If you right click on the file and choose "Properties" you will get more information on the file.

It could be marked as "Read only" you can change that by clicking the square beside this and clicking "Apply"

If they are not read only try changing the name of the file at the top of the properties window.

Cheers mate, but unfortunately it still won't let me rename it. I'm stuck with a folder full of important photos called 'New Folder' now. It's really doing in my crust!

If you right click the folder do you get the option for Rename?

Try the Unlocker program from this site. Then check to see if any processes are claiming the folder by right-clicking it and clicking "Unlocker".

Out of curiosity, though, if you move the files elsewhere, can you delete the folder, or does it give you the same error?

Yup, that's how I am attempting to do it.

I'll give the unlocker prog a shot. I don't want to even TRY to delete the folder though as if I lost them photos it'd be disastrous.

    Cheers

Unlocker usually works. One more suggestion: Copy the contents of the valuable folder to a new properly named folder and then delete the original folder and the already copied contents.

Are the pictures in the folder protected? Check the pictures with the right click > Properties method.

You could just make a new folder named what ever you like and copy/paste the photos into the new folder.
