Some time ago I received advice on how to repair XP by typing a alphabetical sequence in the "run" dialog box of WinXP (similar to "msconfig", "dxdiag" or "Rededit"). It would launch a self-diagnostic program & then WinXP would prompt you to insert the WinXP Disc to repair the installation. Can anyone please remind me of this command? Thank You

Would it be "sfc/ scannow" ?

Geez- I think that is it - but Windows won't recognize it. It seems I've lost all the extras in WinXP ( Help, System Restore, System Information, etc.) but all programs seem to run fine - should I even care?
    Thanx

Please pardon my mistake! The command may be " sfc /scannow". If you have lost the abilities that you mention, then I would worry!

OK I am a neewb, but what exactly will this do for me? Is this something I should do once and a while just to make sure I am running ok?

Thanks, and don't laugh at me...:)

    Nice write-up on SFC http://www.networkclue.com/os/Windows/commands/sfc.php

Use once in a while? not really this is more of a tool to help repair a faulty system file if your having some problems, if your PC is working ok then their is no need to run SFC
