Repeated BSOD

My laptop computer (Acer Aspire 5920) occasionally gets the so-called blue screen of death (BSOD) when I start it up. It only happens when I start the PC; not at other times. The BSOD is there for such a short period of time that I’m unable to read it. Every time the PC reboots and starts up normally – although I do get a screen asking me in which mode I want to start Windows. After Windows starts properly a dialogue box pops up telling me Windows has recovered from a crash and would I like to search for a solution. I opt for finding a solution each time but none is ever offered.

In between times the PC, to the best of my knowledge, functions properly. The BSOD has just become a minor irritation. I would like to know how to discover the issue(s) causing the BSOD and how to resolve/repair them.

My PC runs Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.

Right click Computer and select Properties. Then click on System Protection then the Advanced tab. In Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button. Uncheck Automatically Restart and uncheck Overwrite any existing file (each of your BSODs may have different causes). Also change the type of dump from Kernal memory dump to Small memory dump (64KB) — this will allow you to attach the dump to your posts as a ZIP archive so the experts in BSODs can look at them and make suggestions.

BTW, I'm running Vista Ultimate SP2.

Thanks for replying to my cry for help.

Do I need to write down and post what it says on the BSOD or is posting the memory dump sufficient?

    Thanks, mark59

P.S. I'm really showing my ignorance now: where will the small memory dump be saved by the PC when this happens again?

The dump will be saved in C:\Windows\minidump.

The BSOD screen info will be helpful along with the dump file.

It has happened again. I don't know whether to post the details here or start a new thread. I'm posting here and if I should have started a new thread I'm sure I'll be told.

The information that was on the blue screen of death is reproduced below in a quote box. The small memory dump is attached as a zip file.

I've read the minidump with BlueScreen View from NirSoft.

All indications point to a recent device driver update OR a Windows update — the fact that it occurs on Startup, NTOS kernel, BAD POOL, etc. I tend to think it's a device driver that was recently updated. There's a saying "If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it." Sometimes updating device drivers, especially when they're already working properly, isn't the best choice.

Upon further investigation, I found that RapportPG.sys is the culprit.

Do you have Trusteer Rapport installed? Have a look at this thread.

I do have Trusteer's Rapport. I went to the link provided; however, there is no file called RapportCerberus_19417.sys. Consequently, I can't delete it.

    I haven't updated any drivers.

It's RapportPG.sys — the driver that's installed for Trusteer that's destabilizing your computer. Read through the thread. You may need to delete a Registry value as well.

I do not have RapportPG.sys on the PC. I do not have the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\RapportCerberus_19417
