Okay, I'll try again. My first try got refused for no reason, so if this doesn't go I'm done with this website! Power surge (probably) took out the power connection between the PSU and mobo. I managed to pry them apart cleanly using a putty knife. CPU, memory, video card, etc. All work in a replacement mobo and PSU, but I can't find a full-featured mobo. The Gigabyte GA-7VT600had SATA and firewire connections as well as more memory and PCI slots. The PCChips M848A doesn't have these features. It's the only new Socket A mobo I could find for sale. After a major thunderstorm the Gigabyte mobo worked intermittently with problems coming and going, and with occasional messages about insufficient power to ... . CPU is an AMD XP 2600+ at 2.08 GHz. I've been trying to scrape out the melted plastic from the PSU connector that remains in the mobo Power Connector sockets (all four vcc pins) but not having much luck - not much room to maneuver, and no really good tools to work with. Would appreciate advice from anyone familiar with replacing intermal mobo parts, as I've never gone into it that deeply. Or, if anyone knows where I might be able to get a new, replacement mobo with all the features at a reasonable price?

Chances are that the power connector is not the only problem on the burnt motherboard. Even if you did manage to replace the connector, it would most likely be a waste of time. More good news: the socket A platform is more or less obsolete and VERY few manufacturers are still building them. If you need firewire you could go with a PCI IEEE1394 controller. They're fairly cheap (under $40). I'll poke around and see if I can find a suitable motherboard for you. In the meantime, maybe you could check EBay or Craigs List or some similar sites for a board that will fill your needs.
