So I have Comcast not sure which package but its 100 a month and was screaming fast. For more than a year i could consistently get 2-5mb down on steam and torrents and also watch multiple simultaneous netflix and hulu streams. At some point we moved the tv and the Belkin router we had was plugged into the wrong AC adapter and eventually burned out. So i did some research and asked around on the net to find out what the best low cost router i could get and I purchased an Asus N12B1 router/ap. I connected the N12 using the default settings and connected my machines one via wifi and one via Ethernet. Both machines now have horrible connections to the Internet when connect via the router, however if i plug the wired machine directly to the modem it works lightning fast again. Comcast has verified i I am not being throttled and they couldn't find anything wrong, in fact they stated i was getting great performance.

So now I trying to figure out why this nice router runs like *** compared to my 6 year old $40 Belkin, i have run Netalyzr and the only thing it found was "excessive buffering". I've done a bit of research and tried changing QOS settings but no change. My router is wall mounted at about 6 feet high and my machine is about 10 feet away with nothing between the two. I can't stream a 240p movie or load large images, websites take forever, it really sucks. Any advice would really help, thanks!

The relevant portion of the netalyzr log: -

Network Access Link Properties + –
    Network performance (?): Latency: 86 ms, Loss: 0.0% +
    TCP connection setup latency (?): 94ms +
Background measurement of network health (?): no transient outages +
    Network bandwidth (?): Upload 4.5 Mbit/s, Download 290 Kbit/s –
Your Uplink: We measured your uplink's sending bandwidth at 4.5 Mbit/s. This level of bandwidth works well for many users.
Your Downlink: We measured your downlink's receiving bandwidth at 290 Kbit/s. This rate could be considered somewhat slow, and may affect your user experience if you perform large transfers.
Network buffer measurements (?): Uplink is good, Downlink 6500 ms –
We were not able to produce enough traffic to load the uplink buffer, or the uplink buffer is particularly small. You probably have excellent behavior when uploading files and attempting to do other tasks.
We estimate your downlink as having 6500 ms of buffering. This is quite high, and you may experience substantial disruption to your network performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large downloads. With such a buffer, real-time applications such as games or audio chat can work quite poorly when conducting large downloads at the same time.
