    Hello all,

I was having some heat issues with my cpu so I got a new heatsink and fan and installed it today, and after install I start up the computer and up pops the graphic screen that says the motherboard brand and model and press del to enter setup or tab to display post bios, and it just sits there so I start sweating thinking I screwed up somthing, but after 2-3 min it goes on as normal windows starts and the computer works no problems.

I played a graphic and cpu intesive game for several hours and had no trouble so I restarted the system and the same thing, hangs up at that mobo screen then starts fine after a few min, and when its on that screen if I hit del or tab nothing happens, no setup or post.

    System;
    Asus p5n-e sli mobo
intel core 2 duo E6750 cpu
    3 gig ram
    Evga GTS450 GPU
    windows vista
and the heatsink/fan I just installed; Cooler Master RR-910-HTX3-GP Hyper TX3

The only thing that could cause that would be if the fan you've installed doesn't have an RPM sensor/its defective and the mobo is hanging on startup believing there is no fan connected, usually if this happens though the computer just won't start at all, does your new fan connect in the CPU fan header and have 3 wires?

Most likely the problem isn't related to the CPU fan rule it out simply by disconnecting your new fan and plugging in your old one then start the computer, the computer will be fine for few minutes without a fan just while you see if it boots normally.

My first hunch is that you've inadvertently reset the bios and its defaulted to slow memory check,is there a memory counter while your waiting?

What are the settings in BIOS for the CPU-fan? Maybe it is set so that the fan only jumps in when cpu-temperature reaches a certain level?

the fan is running full blast from the moment I turn the switch on, it has 4 wires and seems to be working well, took me from around 38 deg idle and nearly 83 deg on some games to 28 deg idle and max 54 deg on same games.

the only screen I see is the one that has the asus graphic and says P5N-E SLI press delete to enter setup press tab to display bios post message, no memory counter that I see, also I cant seem to get it to enter the setup or display the post, even if I start hitting the delete or tab before I press the power and keep hitting them all the way through the 3-4 min delay untill the windows loading screen comes up.

will try just plugging the old fan in and starting up just long enough to see if it delays or goes through like it used to.

Ok I unplugged the new fan and plugged in the old one to test, the computer booted up fine, not even 5 seconds delay on that screen, so I shut down and plug the new one back in and when I fire it up it shoots past the mobo screen like it used to :confused so to recheck I hit restart and it stops on the mobo screen for maybe 20 seconds and boots fine, so now the delay is closer to normal (down to 10-30 seconds from nearly 4 min), so maybe I dint have the plug seated right? doesnt make sense to me since the fan was working fine though :confused

Can you enter your bios now? With your new fan connected enter bios and check the RPM reading is accurate.

Does the fan slow down once the computer is booted? If not this would point to a broken speed sensor.

If your new fan works fine you may want to enter bios and disable halt on all and CPU fan RPM warning,as a last resort.

I have never messed with BIOS much so I am not sure what I am looking for but yes I can enter setup now, and under power tab I find some fan related things, CPU fan Q-Control? not sure what this is but its set to disable and the rpm reading is showing 2872 or 2884 or 2896 changing every few seconds and the rpm warning is set to 600 rpm.

the fan seems to run at the same speed from the moment the power is on untill shutdown, iirc the old oem fan ran the same way, and the boot up is going smoothly still but I would like to figure out what I did wrong for future reference

Q control is ASUS "quiet control?" anyway it controls the CPU fan speed based on temperature which all motherboard do so you want this set to enabled, this should slow your fan down while your CPU is Idling/cool.

I checked the specs of your 92mm fan and that means it's running at full speed all the time 2800RPM.

Most likely the fan had a poor connection before as you said.

I enabled the q control and it slowed the fan way down, my idle temp seems to have bumped up to around 34C and though I havent yet tried playing a game it did get as high as 46C on startup without a change in fan speed, is there a program i can use to test that the fan will speed up when needed? and what temps should I stay under on my cpu? I am using CoreTemp 0.99.8 to monitor the cpu temps

Run prime 95 and monitor your temperatures and fan RPM.

If the noise of your fan is not a problem to you you always have the option of leaving it at full blast,I personally can't stand loud fans.

Your idle temperature will be higher with the fan set to slow down when the cpu is cold but its WAY under normal operating temperature even at 46C and your maximum CPU temperature will be unaffected with Q fan enabled.
