I have a Gateway MT6840 which has a DVD drive that is not working. I think it the DVD hardware and would like to replace it. Would anyone know where I can find steps to remove the DVD from the laptop?

    Thanks

The MT6000/MX6000 series is very easy to work on and user-friendly even for non-techs for a lot of upgrades and repairs; luckily, the optical drive is one of them and removing the drive is relatively easy.

You just flip over the laptop, remove the oddly shaped cover that's housing the RAM, heatsink and processor and then remove the one screw securing the DVD drive, which is located here:

    Then pull the drive out.

    Easy, right?

I do not have much experience in laptops, but what I found is either a kind of push button or one or two screws in the botton; I do that after taking of the battery pack and when I need more specific instructions I google them and with luck I fund them.

Deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry keys is a pretty common fix for a missing CD drive; you should always go through all possible software fixes BEFORE assuming (or buying) hardware. Glad you have it working though.
