Replacement For Outdated Microsoft Forefront Client Security

Hello,

I need a replacement for the outdated Microsoft Forefront Client Security on my Father's laptop. He is running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. His computer is on the domain of the college where he worked before he retired and all the software installation was done by them. Apparently they didn't push out anything new when Forefront whet dead. I guess they don't do much in the way of software updates for Win 7 computers and their stock answer is generally to update to Windows 10 or 11 and use the integrated anti-virus.

I have generally thought that Windows anti-malware and firewalls and such were mediocre at best. Why else is there a multi-billion dollar industry for anti-malware software when Windows has provided a free firewall and anti-virus since Windows XP? If they own software adequately secures their system for free then why are there so many users paying for something else.

At any rate, I haven't looked at anti-malware software in quite a while so I would appreciate some advice. I think that the combination of application execution white listing and firewall application connection white listing offers the best protection, but again, I haven't looked at this in a bit.
