Replaced a mobo for a friend, in a Dell Dimension 2350...even though the board came from DEll and the copy of windows that originally came with the system works with the new board...should I still have to run a windows repair after installing the new board?? It works fine in safe mode...since that it is where I'm currently posting from! But in regular mode...it locks up anywhere from two to five minutes after loading the windows desktop!! There doesn't appear to be any pattern related to diagnosing what could be the culprit!! Obviously there is something loading in regular mode that isn't loading in safe mode which is ofcourse allowing me to work infinitely in safe mode...but the event viewer isn't showing anything...no bsod...no conflict in the hardware manager...so where in the world would you narrow it down at!!??

I know you have to do a new install or repair install of Windows, when you change any major hardware, like the mobo or cpu, etc.!! But I didn't know if that was the case, if you got the exact same motherboard, and it was a case like where dell tattoos the OS to the board!!??

Not to be greedy, but...since i'm on location (don't want to be here all day) I was hoping someone here might have a quick answer!!

    Thanks a million!!

i assume that you have to repair windows even if you are installing the same mobo as before. even though its the same board type its not the same board.

That's kind of what I thought...but was just looking for some re-enforcement on the thought!!

The problem seems to be related to either...a so called "fips" and "processor driver" or the Mcafee security center...it's so UN-patterned it's hard to nail it down!! I did however, install an intel chipset driver, and so far it's ok...but i've also got the McAfee stuff disabled in the start-up menu in msconfig!!

Guess I'll start re-enabling them one at a time and see what comes of it!!!!

the only time you have to do a windows repair when installing a new motherboard is when the chipsets are different. This is due to the different motherboard drivers. Since it is the same chipset the drivers are the same.

That's pretty much what I was thinking....oh well...after almost pulling my hair out...and spending two and a half hours on the phone so some idiot at dell couldread the troubleshooting steps from a book, and then deteermine that it is indeed a defective motherboard....and finally authorized my to return it!!!!
