Requesting help with Compaq laptop video drivers

First off, please forgive me if this question has been posted elsewhere. I didn't find it here, so I figured it would be all right to post this. Anyway...

I have an old Compaq Presario laptop I bought back in 2001 that I've recently been trying to repurpose in order to play a lot of my older DOS and Win95 games, since my new PC with Windows 7 apparently won't run Virtual Desktop, and DOS Box doesn't run everything as well as I'd like. And also, I suppose, because I have the laptop sitting around and I might as well do something with it.

I reformatted the hard drive and installed Windows 98SE. Everything seemed to be going well, but things looked a bit...funny. It wasn't until I tried to change the display settings that the problem hit me.

The computer only displays in 16 colors in Windows, and offers a maximum resolution of 640 x 480. Considering it used to display in 32-bit, this is somewhat bewildering.

I'm not sure what video drivers I need, whether this is a problem with the monitor or something else. DOS games, running through the command prompt, will run with normal color and, apparently, normal resolution. It's just Windows that's giving me a hard time.

Also, for some reason, when I restart the computer in MS-DOS mode, it doesn't recognize the CD-ROM drive.

The computer is a Compaq Presario, Series CM2080, and the model number listed on the sticker on the bottom is 17XL460.

I feel like I ought to know how to fix this problem myself, but my knowledge of computer is more than a little...shall we say, uneven. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Go here and use the drop down box to select your operating system. You have ATI graphics.
