Anyone playing the MMORPG Requiem: Bloodymare? My understanding is that it was started by a group of people who left WoW. The game is, in theory, restricted to 17+ years of age. At any rate there do seem to be far fewer rants and petty insults and flame wars than in WoW. But the game only has three servers (1 is PvP). On the other hand the graphics are darker and, I feel, more interesting than WoW. You can download the client and play for free. If you wish you can pay a subscription fee (either $8 or $15 I think) and get increased exp points as well as some other bonuses. In addition, there are special items in the game "mall" available for purchase (you buy special currency with real money and then use that currency to buy "mall" items).

I've been having a good time playing for free and only just decided to upgrade to the $15 level for a month and then I'll see what I think.

If anyone else is playing from MG let me know. Maybe we can meet up and whack some beasties together. If anyone wants to read the official wiki and check the game out you can do that at the link below and also download the free client to play (download is several gigs if I recall correctly):

You have to verify your age by entering your birth date and then you can access the games home page, read the game wiki, download the client etc.

Hey, I checked out your blog and found it quite interesting. And clicking on the PUMA link and then another link there I came across this comment which made me wonder if the ghost of Hunter S. Thompson (the "Better Than Sex" political junkie and madman with the mojo wire) was still out there:

    "....moolah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his ... heart."
(Political party reference removed as there are such types on both sides of the aisle imho.)

    Blog on!

I'm continuing to play Requiem and enjoying it. I do wish there were a wider variety of character faces/avatars to choose from, but that probably won't happen unless the game acquires substantially more players who start complaining about that aspect of the game.

Those who've played WoW won't have much trouble getting started with Requiem even if you just jump right in blind. And if you take the time to read the beginner instructions on the game's home page that's all the better. The game certainly varies considerably from WoW in some ways, especially as you get farther into the game, apparently. But I've seen some differences already after playing for just the past 3 or 4 evenings.

The game's landscapes and towns mostly seem to have a "darker" look than much of WoW. In addition, while the game has primarily the look of a sword and sorcery world, it also has some technology (as does WoW) and pretty clear statements of a sci-fi underpinning for the fantasy world (anyone recall "Crusaders of the Dark Savant"?) that, perhaps, becomes more important at higher levels in different areas of the game than seen at the beginning.

Another important difference is that Requiem has only 3 servers -- at least that's all I see when start up the game. I've played on two of the three (the third server allows PvP and I'm not ready for that yet!) and while there are certainly others online playing, the world is noticeably more empty of other real players (but has plenty of NPC's and monsters roaming around) than WoW, for example. Depending on how you feel about that you may find that a plus or a minus. I find, so far at least, that I enjoy playing in a less crowded virtual world.

Servers aren't designated for different geographical areas/countries/continents. Hardly surprising given there are, currently, only three servers. Consequently, you'll sometimes see German text in the chat window, for example. But there are a fair number of English speaking players and so that's not a big drawback if, like me, you're only fluent in English. My understanding is that Requiem is based in South Korea, or at least started there but the game itself doesn't, as far as I can see, particularly play or look different in style than WoW -- though as I mention elsewhere in this post, the game world has a darker more sinister look overall and is somewhat more violent and bloody and player's avatars and game NPC's are frequently dressed rather provocatively.

At the beginning of play with a newly created character your quests will be the typical "get me so many of these", "take a message to...", "see if so and so is OK" and so on. You look for NPC's with a yellow exclamation mark over their head in order to obtain quests. Outfit yourself with better and better gear from loot drops, sell what you don't need or can't use and buy lots of health and magic potions. Get your armor and weapons repaired by NPC repair blacksmiths as they will degrade with use over time.

While there are only four character races each race can specialize in different "jobs" (similar to "professions" or "classes" in other games). Job changes, however, are only granted after your character accumulates enough skill points (separate from experience points which you need to level). When you change jobs your character's abilities are modified also so that he/she may be able to use different types of weapons and armor than before, for example (while losing use of some of the types of weapons and armor your character was allowed for their earlier "job").

Another game wrinkle is DNA. Yes, your character's DNA can be altered by special NPC's every so often allowing additional spells to be used and more powerful upgrades to spells already known. (This part of the spell system reminds me of the one in the single player game "Sacred".)

Similarities to other sword and sorcery online games include: guilds, a bank, in-game mail, air travel services provided by NPC's for a fee, general and regional chat channels, guild chat, joining ad hoc groups to help each other complete quests, and varied ways of dividing up loot drops (set by the group leader). In addition, Requiem: Bloodymare also has instances and raids though, as a noob to the game, I've yet to participate in any of those. And yes, I've already seen several characters soliciting/offering to sell the in-game currency and game items for real dollars. So there are gold farmers here too.

The game client may be downloaded for free and the game played for free and I found the free version lots of fun, but after the first couple of nights I sprang for some game "mall money" in order to buy a mount to speed up overland travel (more like leasing a mount actually as it is only good for 30 days, but may then be purchased/leased again). And I also decided to opt for the higher of two "pay for play" options.

The lower option is, I think, $8 per month while the more expensive is $15 per month. Both options provide a bonus to experience points compared to free play. And, of course, the higher fee players get a larger exp bonus than those playing at the cheaper monthly rate. There are other benefits to paying to play, but you can check those out on the Requiem: Bloodymare website if you're interested in all the details.

I used Paypal to quickly and easily make these purchases and so didn't have to supply the Requiem gamesite with a credit card number. And if, after 1 month, I wish to drop to the $8 per month pay for play, or resume playing for free I can, I think, retain my character and his accumulated loot but will, of course, no longer be granted an additional exp bonus for monsters slain/quests completed.

The game is, in theory, restricted to those of 17 years of age or older. Consequently, when you kill a monster there's generally a some blood, sometimes a decapitation, and the torso may wriggle around on the ground a bit in some death throes. Furthermore, NPC's and players' characters dress may be pretty skimpy sometimes so be advised.

Lastly, the game's moderators don't seem overly concerned about suggestive names as I've seen a fair number of them. Some of them really made me wonder if their creators were, in fact, over 16 years old.
But I've found most players to be helpful and polite and yes, there's the occasional jerk to be encountered as is true of most online games, I think. In general, people on the two Requiem servers I've encountered stay pretty busy playing and having fun and there seems to be very few people standing around bragging about their characters and how quickly the've leveled and so on.

If you're interested check out the game's home page at:

    I'm off to play! :wave

Where are you stuck and why? I'm at level 15, almost 16. Had some problems finding a few quest creatures here and there and also some problems with the miners' ghosts, but finally decided to just stock up on health potion water and that worked. Once I reached level 15 I could tinker with my DNA and that gave me some new (healing) spells as well as allowing me to beef up some of my attack spells.

Let me know if I can help you out.
