We are switching to cable, but my parents wish to keep the family off unless they ask or put in a password. I have been playing with nocat auth in my linksys router. Any thoughts, suggestions would be helpful.

Why not use Windows log in and give the users a user account and password? Anyone that is not a user cannot log in.

Sorry let me be more clear. Windows xp, with every user having an account. We need the computer to be usably, ie word and powerpoint, but only block the internet.

Do you have only the one computer accessing the router either by wire or wirelessly? And what model of router do you have?

Multiple computers, family computer will be hard wired, plus my xp box and my 2 linux box, both which aren't an issue as only the family one is needing to be secured. Currently have a wrt54tg running open wrt which has time based stopping but parents aren't satisified with that.

No matter what you do to keep a person from abusing their privledge, there is no way to stop them from accessing the source. You would have to either set up policies on all the machines to keep them from accessing the Internet by blocking ports (can be changed in Internet settings if the person knows what they are doing), or blocking IP's (What is to stop the user from changing to another IP, even if static).

Only real way would be to set up a secondary router for the inner network that is only going to be communicating to each other, but would be sensless, due to the computers would have to be able to get their updates through the Windows and Linux update servers.

There is no real hard way of blocking a person from accessing the Internet on a Home system, unless you utilize the same software that is used for Public hotspots.

It won't be easy, due to the cost will be there, unless you use a Radius server with a Linux box, but you are talking a full-time job. And like I said, what is to stop a person from changing the IP to another one.

Here is some from Sourceforge.net http://sourceforge.net/search/?words=hotspot&type_of_search=soft Have fun.

Sorry ment to update this when i resolved it, i just wrote a batch file to release the ip upon logon, and used a hidden user account and runas command for the password prompt to renew the ip, works great.
