I inherited an old laptop, Win 98, HP Pavilon Notebook, but it is password protected and the owner hasn't used the machine in years and has no idea as to the password.

I know with towers you can jump some contacts to revert to the start bios with no password. Is there a similar way to do this with a laptop?

If I press F8 during boot, I do get to a setup screen, but it asks me for the password.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Usually notebooks with BIOS passwords can't be reset. But one old enough to be running win98 might night have great protection. Google the model number and "BIOS password" and see what you get. Look for similar posts and possibly a manual available for download.
