    Hey guys,

I have been using my Geforce 8600gt 1gb for over a year now and never had the need to use it over 1280x1024. But i have recently bought myself a 40" HDTV 1080p, the Samsung LE40A656, i have connected my PC to both my monitor and my HDTV using a VGA switch-box, i would now like to use my PC at 1920x1080. Everytime i select this setting i get the message 'Not Supported', I am using windowes XP service pack 3, i have fully updated my Nvidia drivers and i know my Gcard is capable of much higher resolutions.

Is anyone able to tell me how i can fix it so that i can use my computer at this desired resolution on my new TV?

    Thanks.

Im thinking that the problems i get is a cause of everything still being connected by VGA, will i need to upgrade to DVI or even HDMI?

If so will i need to replace all cables and the VGA Switch-Box, or could i just stick an adaptor on everything and get the same results?

Any oppinions? Any idea to what the problem may be? Anyone able o confirm my theory?

    Hello,

Yes, it is probably the fact that you are using VGA to connect.

However, I have been looking around on the nVIDIA site, and the only model of 8600GT they have on there is the 256MB version. Where did you get a 1GB version from? Because if the card has been heavily altered to put 1GB of GRAM on there, then it may have also been altered to restrict the screen resolutions it operates at.

Okay, from reading up on that, can you use a S-Video connector to connect your computer to the TV?

The S-Video connector cable should have been supplied with your card. It will probably be in two parts, with an adapter and a cable. The cable will have the same ends on it, and the adapter will have a pair of different ends on it. If the adapter is integrated into the cable, each end of the cable will have different ends on it.

This end of the cable or adapter goes into the socket on the computer:

This end of the cable goes into the TV socket coloured in the same way:

Note: this will not provide Audio, just video.

Your monitor probably doesn't support 1920x1080, you'll need to check the manufacturers specs as to what its native resolution is.
Generally windows will restrict what resolutions are available based on what your monitor can support.

Using S-video won't give you 1080p on your TV, more like 480p, its still an analogue signal

Best to stick to HDMI, DVI-D or VGA in that order of preference depending on what inputs are available on the TV.

ok i think i will try going for hdmi / dvi, will i have to replace all my cable anf my vga switch box to a dvi swtich box, or will a simple vga-dvi adaptor suffice?

note: im not trying to get 1080 on my monitor (it doesnt support that), just on my TV.

For true high def 1080p goodness you need to use HDMI or DVI-D.
HDMI differs only in that it carries the audio signal as well so you only need to run one cable to the TV.

Whats the VGA switch box for?
Putting a switch box and/or adaptors inline is only going to degrade the signal...

For the best picture you really want to run the TV off one of the DVI outputs and your monitor off the other and use the Nvidia driver software within windows to switch outputs

Sorry, I've just realised, your switch box will probably not support a resolution higher than 1280 x 1024.

P.S. sorry for the oversize pictures. I did try to resize them but it wouldn't let me.
