    i'm running windows 98se on a laptop, a compaq armada 1700.

my screen is small, so the best i could do was 600 x 800.

however a few days ago my computer decided it had to restart and ever since it will ONLY work on 480 x 640.

when i reset the screen size, the computer boots up and loads windows, but all it gives me is a blank screen. I have to turn it off and on again, a few times, until it gives me the option to restart in safe mode.

i've done virus scans, trojan scans, spyware scans, my computer seems to be clean. I deleted a bunch of junk, in case it was a memory issue, it doesn't appear to be.

    what should i try next?

    thank you!

it sounds like you may need to reinstall your display driver. here is a link to the hp/compaq support page with a number of armada 1700's to choose from. you should find your exact model number on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

once you click the right one, look for available drivers for download, and try them.

    hope that helps some.

    Thank you.

    I have the Armada 1700 Family 6233/T/4000/D/0/1
here is the webpage for the drivers available.

the only graphics driver is for a video driver. nothing else seems to apply. am i missing something?

Just a suggestion here, but he might want to have some physically check his video card(if he has one) or the motherboard(if has onboard video). This may be a hardware issue. I have a hercules prophet card and it did the same thing to me. Turned out the chipset fan on the card burned out and the carrd was getting hot and kicking the failsafe.

The video driver you found should be what you need for software. Try the driver first and see if that works.:)
