I got a gateway and need to do a clean install. I was told i need to use the restoration cd prior to installing xp. would this install win 98 or just my bios or what? I have a xp upgrade cd and would like to install this without installing win 98 components to have my drive cleaner than it was. Is the restoration cd vital or significant in any way that should make me use this before installing xp

As I explained in your other thread, Bios is seperate to Windows, so ignore it for now.

As far as the question on installing XP, to run an upgrade CD you must be eligible, and a restoration CD isn't.

In other words, you must possess a previous version of Windows. Restoration CD's aren't considered.
