Restauring Emails from Vista/Outlook 2007

Hi guys !

My uncle came to me with this problem and I didn't find the answer yet so I would appreciate your help !

In his old computer (with VISTA), my Uncle was saving his emails in sub-folders in Microsoft Outlook 2007. For a reason I dont know, he changed his computer but he told me that he kept everything that he had on his hard drive. He has now Windows 7 and he uses the Outlook that come with the brand new office suit.

The problem is that he lost all the emails that he had on the old version of Outlook.

So my question is : Where can I locate the emails in his old hard drive and how can I tranfer them in the NEW Outlook ?

His emails, contacts and calendar are on the old drive in a file with the extension .pst and from what you say it's unlikely he would have changed the default filename, outlook.pst. So you need to attach his old drive to a working computer and search it for that file. Something like Everything will find the file in no time at all. Copy the file to a flash drive and then into his Documents folder on his new computer. You then have to open Outlook and use its Data File Management feature to add the file to his Outlook. Once the file has been mounted in Outlook you can drag and drop between his current Outlook folders and those in the new data file to tidy everything up.

Files should be located in C:\Users\PROFILENAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

You may need to change folder options to 'View Hidden Files"

.pst and .ost files are used for Outlook to store all that.
If I recall, .ost is the default for a normal profile while .pst is used for archives

.ost files are used when working with a Microsoft Exchange account. Most users use POP or IMAP accounts and their data is kept in a .pst file.

 

Doh.
That's right. I only ever deal with exchange type accounts so that is what I am used to seeing haha.
