    Hey all,.... Need some ideas.
Friend of mine used the restore disk on her pc. It is win98. She didn't realize it erased everything, and her husband is very upset.
Is there anyway to reverse that in Win98 and restore lost email, etc., files...... thanks

Unfortunately my using a restore disk everything is pretty well gone. I don't suppose a backup had been done?

A low level disk editor may be able to recover some files and even some fragments of files but the only thing is this becomes less and less likely the more the PC is used as the disk space they occupy is overwritten.

No they didn't back up the system. What a bummer. Thanks

    I will do that!
Right now I am using a program called Easy Recovery that someone gave me. I tried the demos from here, but they won't load on their PC. It says there is a missing DLL file. So I have a neat disc with some neat things, and I found that. I will let you know. Write now it is hanging.
during all this mess, I have the pc opened because there Modem quit working. It is finding the modem on diagnostics but it will not finish the initiation string test. The dial up won't recognize it. (gotta love my cable)
There are two PCI ports and I have tried both ports. They even purchased a brand new modem... a US Robotics, and it still won't go through diagnostics. Any suggestions on that.
Now... My post is in the wrong place.....(LOL)
One more thing.... they have only 64mb of memory in there system, so I have some laying around from systems I tore apart..... (for spare parts)... They same memory sticks that the pc takes, I put in, and they didn't work correctly. I tried two matching sticks, I tried one at a higher rate.... but don't ask me what it is, the stick doesn't say......
The pc boots and said memory error..... then is says it was corrected... I think maybe at that point it worked....
    Wow.... what a mess.

  5. You gotta know what type of ram the pc takes and what clock its gotta be to upgrade it lol. Sounds like your working with an old timer pc anyway. Maybe suggest they just get a new pc. I got problems of my own with age of the empires and getting some weir error when it tries to run with directdraw weven though my graphics are ATI x600SE graphics with directx9.0c. Go figure. Well i had to work with my sousins old laptop which he uses for school once. An old dell with 64 MB of Ram and like i think i 133MHz processor. It was slow and i had to speed it up. Had dialup so trips here took forever lol. Gave me a new appreciation for my dsl connection lol. In short, it took our entire trip but his computer runs fine now. Irony is he wanted to upgrade it to windows ME but when i saw ram specs i said you better stick with 98 cause there is no way it will support ME on 64 MB of ram.

Yeah, it takes pc100. and yes it is old. It has all 1997 specs in it.
They are definately going to get a new one... but she wants to check her email. I suggested "the library". LOL
anyway........ I got the diagnostics to run with the old modem, not the new one. Changed had it go to com2. It may not work when she gets it back though. Thats always how it works. You give it to someone working fine, and they can't figure anything out because they are pc non so smart.
    Anyways.... thanks a bunch.
Now I can get back to my burning. I found these neat cdr's that look like a record. They are Vinyl on the top, and colored on the bottom. I have a Disk@T laser on my yamaha burner, and it is the coolest lasering images into the unwritten portion of my cd. Well... back to work.
