All of the restore points on my PC suddenly disappeared. Any reason why?

Usually happens when system restore is turned off. Let's verify that it is still on. Please follow these steps:

    1. Hit Windows key + break (or right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Properties)
    2. On the 'System Properties' dialog, select the 'System Restore' tab
    3. Ensure that the checkbox next to 'Turn Off System Restore' is not checked
    4. Ensure that the 'Disk Space To Use' slider isn't set too low (too little space, and you will begin to lose earlier points)

Please post back with the results.

Have you turned of System Restore at all?

Have you been tweaking the Services list?

Check My Computer > Properties > System Restore and see if the Turn Off System Restore on all drives box is ticked or in the drives list, your C drive states its Turned Off.

Doing a repair install will also wipe out all system restore points.

I posted because I hadn't tuned off SR and I hadn't turned off any services. The points just disappeared. There had been a few weeks of points. I have one created automatically every day.

I have the same problem. Checked to see if thy had been turned off like suggested and they had not. I needed to restore system because Mozilla will not open, but only under my profile, and I am the administrator. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it has not helped. It gives me nor error message or anything and that is why I wanted to restore my system. Originaly Internet Explorer was not working either, but I reinstalled my bellsouth cd and it started working.

Have you checked the Event Viewer, System tab, to see if there are any entries regarding System Restore not functioning properly?
You can test System Restore by doing this:
Create a restore point and name it TEST
Create a folder on your desktop and name it SRTest(or whatever you want)
Use System Restore to go back to the TEST restore point . The folder should be gone, meaning System Restore is working. Try it.

What exactly do I look for in the system tab? There aren't many errors.

Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice." Double-click each of these services, and evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem. Make note of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties that show an Error or Warning.

The last sr service entry was for 9/8/06. But the points disappeared a few days ago.

Did you see what the error was about?
There is something wrong or you would not have an error for System Restore at all.

All of the the entries were information entries having to do with low disc space and resumption of sr when I freed disc space. But these were 2 weeks ago. The points were there 4 days ago then gone 2 days ago and sr was still running. If the points were eliminated there should be entries but there are none.

What is the amount of disk space you have set for system restore?
To check right click the My Computer Icon and select 'Properties'
Then click on the System Restore tab and then Settings...you need at least 200MB for system restore to keep restore points or it will purge them.

Maximum. That's right but the strange thing is that I had sr set to maximum with 2 Gbs on the disc free and the system still purged every point. Further, there is no record of the purge in the event log. The only thing is that I changed the calendar month to December and when I changed the date back to September the points were gone. A coincidence I suppose.
