WinXP SP3. Initial install CD does not have SP2 and SP3, they were downloaded.

Each time I try to run access System Restore, I get the attached error message.

I tried to re-install via 'sr.inf' but I get keep getting the file required is not found.

    Do you need more information?

Have you checked the C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Local Settings\Temp\6f17_appcompat.txt file to see what clues it may contain?

Thanks for the response. However, I think the 'Temp' file is used only by
Microsoft when an error report is sent to them. Why do I think that? Because
the entry does not show up in File Explorer:
    C:\Documents and settings\Jim\Local Settings\Temp

See attached screen-shot. Or maybe I don't know how to view it?

I was talking about the 6f17_appcompat.txt file.

...but nothing shows up when I use Explorer to navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Local Settings\Temp\ = No txt files!

I'll search the the computer tonight. Unless someone has another idea..

Does the same thing happen in Safe Mode?

The 6f17_appcompat.txt file was listed in the SysRestoreNot.doc you posted. Have you, (or some application like CCleaner) emptied your TEMP folder?

If the file is gone, my question is now moot.

Adry - Yes, same error in safe mode..

Dan - I think I rember from A+ school that appcompat.txt files are only
used by Windows for transfering error information to Microsoft. Everytime
I try (from anywhere) System Restore, an appcompt.txt file is written to
the Temp file. I think there are very few outside of MS that know how to
read this file. Also, I think the contents of this file are the same as the screen-shot I posted earlier.

I will try to re-install 'System Restore' from an SP2 cd. However, since
MS felt compelled to push SP3 at me, an SP2 disk may not work.

I'm so covered up with Maleware problems right now, I won't try to
re-install 'System Restore' until Major Chaslang can give me a clean
    bill of health.

Thanks for your replies. They have been a valuable addition to my
'Knowledge Base'. Furthermore, I welcome any more suggestions and/or
    comments...

Well I'm pleased to report "System Restore" started operating again right
after Major Chas removed my remaining malware. Great!
