Hello Phil, let's review your objectives and resources.

What pc are you trying to fix - is it the Dell 4550.

What do you mean 'monitor won't stay on? Please give details.

Do you have the Dell recovery disks?
Do you still have the original hard drive?

Do you realise the difference between the bios and the operating system?

What do you mean? Did you or did you not remove the battery? I'm pretty sure there is a cmos reset jumper on this Dell.

Thank You for responding ...Yes it's a dell 4550 I have the original HDD as well as the restore disk I went into the bios to change the boot order to load the OS on the 2nd drive the first is infected with virus's so I had a 60 gig laying around out of another Dell 4550 the problem is that right after it starts to boot into the OS the screen goes blank as if no power is going to it so the Dell splash screen looks good than as its going into the OS nothing happens I looked near the CMOS battery but didn't see any jumper I know I have done that on my other machine to reset it as for the computer its in the original setup I haven't add anything or change anything as far as drives CD ect. on my other comp i have the option to set the bios to default, best, previous these aren't options in these bios
    Phil
The other thing is that I changed the first HDD because after I reinstalled the OS it was only reading 2 gig's its a 100 gig HDD

Looked at the Engineers service disk for the 4550. Couldn't see any jumper indicated but the battery is in a normal socket and easy to remove. You might check the voltage on the battery when you remove it, it should exceed 3 volts. The 4550 must be old enough for the battery to have aged.

The reinstallation procedure is clearly (for Dell) set out in your user manual.
Post again if you have any difficulty with it.
You will also require the drivers cd and the drivers cd for your AGP card. Install these in the following order

    Graphics
    motherboard interface chips
    lan
    audio
    modem

If you require windows updates, get autopatcher from Major Geeks it is much more reliable than trying to get SP1 and/or SP2 from M$.
