Resurection of win98

For the new users win98 may be nothing. But for old pc users as myself and a gamer i recall the times i played some games at win95 and ms-dos. So what happens if i want to play that games at a modern pc??. After trsting i concuded that a computer with windows xp plays old computer better if it relies in older hardware. Meaning the newer your pc then the games from playing in xp you will need to apply the compatibility mode or even worse not been able to paly at all. So SO can you load win98 in modern mainboard +cpu. Yes you can !!!!!
At my atom based flex atx mobo i installed 1gbyte ram and an ati 9259 gpu at pci slot. Playing with the system.ini to limit that windows will only see 512 ram and no more. It happened. WIn98 loaded succedully I installed the gpy no problem. okey gere is the funny trick win98 does not have the drivers for the sata controler but that does not prevent them from seeing the sata harddrive. It reports it is in compatibility mode but hmmmmmm i do not see any drawback in perfomance wait maybe cause win98 are so light. Installed the darkomen and it plays as a charm. Now the interesting part is to bench the system and see what it can deliver mainly as cpu power. maybe we will see a new height at cpu power and win98???

It was one of the happiest days in my life when I dumped win98 and replaced it with Windows 2000! Win 9x/ME - never again; I'd rather install NT4...

 

I have a "virtual" Windows 98SE that I use from time to time to play old games. I created it with Microsoft's free Virtual machine software - it has limitiations on the "hardware" it emulates, but you can set the RAM for whatever level you want. Works very well.

I never actually tried to load 98 on new hardware - I never gave it much thought. I did set up an older machine with it a while back for a family that didn't have much - mainly for their kids to play some old games on and the mom to do some typing. It did not have an internet connection. I'd hesitate to use 98 online.

 

well untill 2-3 years ago wher eyou could have ie6 on 98 internet was not that bad but nowdays you will not be able to see almost no site
i tried the virtual machine but the sound was horrible. do not know what was wrong but it was problematic. i installed the sound card that the virtual machine suggested.
