Retrieve bookmarks from old HD

    Hi again...
I also want to get my bookmarks from Firefox in my old HD and apply them to Firefox in my new HD. (Both are in the computer at the moment.

I see that I could wire the old HD as master, make a backup file of the bookmarks, and transfer the file to the new HD, rewire, and import the backup file into the new Firefox.

Any way I can do it without the rewiring? (It might take me as long as it has writing this post...)
I have the Favorites in Documents and Settings in the old HD. Can I access that HDs copy of Firefox?
    Or is there another workaround?

    Thanks

there are multiple ways of getting files off an old hard drive.

Do you know what type of hard drive it is? .e.g. SATA or IDE?

    Hi
    um....pretty sure SATA. (WDs)

Now, if I could open the Firefox in the old HD I could export the bookmarks as HTML and import that file into the new HD's Firefox. But I don't know as one can do that while both HDs are installed, one as slave. [Go to the (now) E drive, Program Files, open the Firefox application; what opens is the version on the (now) C drive]. I tried rewiring to open the old HD as master, but got a Fatal Blue Screen. [The whole process began a year and a half ago with a serious corruption of Windows in the old HD, which I'm now addressing. Possibly things are deteriorating further, as it would always boot up before].
I can find the bookmark backup files in the old HD, with their weird extension, but I don't know how to use them to get the bookmarks into the new Firefox.

So far, here I sit! You got another dodge?

Denno, which Os is the old hard drive--Xp or Vista/win7?

Thisisu's link tells you the location of the old bookmarks file. Can you get to either of those locations on the old HD (according to the OS)?

So you start at E: in an explorer window then go to Users or Documents and Settings then your username then the rest of the folders until you find bookmarks.html according to the link.

Do you see a bookmarks file and what extension is on it? Can you copy that bookmarks file to your C: drive? If you can copy it we can find how to import it to FF.

    XP Home on both.

New HD w/new installation of XP is now C drive; old HD is now E drive.
I have followed that location on E drive, but there is no "bookmarks.html" folder or file, just "bookmarkbackups."

Bookmarkbackups is a folder so copy the whole folder over to your C: drive. The desktop is fine or wherever you want.

The bookmarks.json files inside are the new format of bookmarks. I can find a way to import one of those files to your current FF.

Take a look at this page at the Restoring Bookmarks from Backup section. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox

Note: When you restore bookmarks all your current bookmarks are lost. The restoration does not add to your current bookmarks but overwrites them so any recent bookmarks will be gone. I think this is understood but just want to warn you.

Which version of FF are you using?

If FF 4.0x then the Firefox button at top left>then Bookmarks>Show All bookmarks>then the Import and Backup button at the top>then Restore>then Choose file>then Browse for the most recent file in your bookmarksbackup folder in the location you saved it.

    Got it! Thanks very much.
BTW, I was refraining from bookmarking anything until I got the old list installed.

    Great! Good work.

Go wild and bookmark freely! :)

Oh, that bookmarkbackup folder is fairly small. Just save it out of the way somewhere, so you have access to those files in the future should you ever want them. (I, personally am relieved when my bookmarks are automatically lost so I don't have to try to clean them myself but I must admit I have lots of backups just in case I ever want to go back.)

I haven't used OE in a couple of years. Not sure I will be of much help.

Let's see if some OE users can help in your original thread.

So, outa curiosity, using something else (obviously)? And why?
I'm at an opportunity to upgrade everything.

Hi, can anyone tell me how to transfer a 'json' (bookmarks) file into my FF5? Updated & lost all my bookmarks & the 'Bookmarks' key is also not working. Any help will be much appreciated. SRoy

Welcome scottroy, a new thread would have been better ;)

Start Firefox > Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks > Import and backup > Restore > Choose file ... point it at your recovered *.json file.
