    Hi.

My Aunt is asking if she can get deleted files from her trash can.
Is there software to retrieve it, or does a tech have to go into the hard drive somehow?

She says she can get deleted email at work.
Any thoughts on the deleted files from the trash can?

    I believe she uses Vista.

    Thank you.
    :)

Don't know if they work with Vista, but you could try Recuva or FreeUndelete.
Both can recover deleted files as long as too many programs have been installed after the deletion.
Both work with XP, so maybe.

I have not used the 1st two programs; I have used the 3rd one many times with great results on WinXP; I don't know how it works with Vista. It lets you search for specific file names, or it will just scan for deleted files. It then provides a list of what it finds. Keep in mind that the more you use the PC, the higher chance that the data will be lost forever. So it's not a real good idea to recover data to the same drive you're trying to recover it from. You should try to save the recovered data to an external drive (or USB flash drive) so you don't over-write the deleted stuff you're trying to save.

If the 3 programs I listed don't work (they're all 100% free), there's MANY more in the Data Recovery Section here at Major Geeks, and many are 100% free.
    :-D
    Good luck!

Thank you for bringing up this point...
I didn't think to ask, I'm on the assumption that the recycle bin has been emptied. The information I gave in my first post is all that I had.
A great reminder that the more information I can provide will help all of us, lol.
    My apologizes.
    :)

    Yet another good point.
    :-o

Unfortunately, I've been told through the grape vine that she's decided not to try and retrieve the deleted files... from which one of the 2 types, now I have no idea, lol.
    :confused

    I'm sorry about the confusion.
Hopefully others will come across this thread and may be of help to them.
