it seems my motherboard has died. if i were to get the exact same mb and use all the old components.....video card, sound card , disk drives..etc. , will the old hd still work with os already on it ? and would all data still be there ?

    Hi

Yes data will still be on it so long as it was not the HDD that is cause of PC issue.

It couldn't hurt to unplug the computer take out the CMOS battery for a minute or two and put back together and see it it boots to the BIOS screen.

The data would survive but unless the motherboard is the exact same make and model the OS would have to be reinstalled.

Make sure you get a motherboard with all of the correct connectors/slot types etc, especially RAM and CPU slots if you plan to reuse those.

Before you dash out and spend money on a new motherboard, perhaps you would like to post the exact symptoms.

There are plenty of other reasons you might have a black screen.

If you are prepared to change the motherboard and have an old one lying around you might be able to at least check the other components - memory, video card etc etc using it.

Okay, this sounds like a dead video slot, or monitor cable, or monitor.

Does the motherboard have onboard graphics?

Do you know what type of graphics card slot the motherboard has?

Can you test the monitor on a different computer?

Can you test a different monitor cable?

Again thanks to all in responding with help.

Oldphil I see absolutely nothing on boot. the monitor doesnt even recognize its connected to anything. again the only thing on boot is the 1 beep , I think I hear hdd start and some light flash on keyboard. thats it.

Whilst it is certainly possible your motherboard has died it would be expensive to be wrong.

Your posts are very short. You can't provide too much information only too little.

How was the pc running before the problem?
What changes did you make (software/updates/hardware) just before the problem?
    What is the operating system?
    Hardware details?
Disconnect everthing connected to your motherboard except the psu and video. (keyboard, mouse, printers, hard drive, PCI cards, particularly anything USB.)

Is there anything jammed in a USB port or damage to one?

What actually happens when you power up? Watch the monitor power light, not the screen. Does it change colour or flash?
