I reversed the polarity on the AC power jack on my HP nx7300 notebook when I had re-soldered it back together when it had snapped off. The fizz and that crisp, burnt electrical smell (the one that reminds you that you f*cked up big time!) came forth from the air-vents.

I'm looking at it right now. Anyone with any idea what exactly got fried? (please don't tell me the processor or motherboard!)

Reversing the line and neutral would not cause the effects you describe.

Post a full description of what else you had connected to the pc.
Photos of the connection would be handy.
Is the connection to an external power supply brick and have you got the voltage selector set correctly?
Did you solder the wires to the correct terminals?
