revert to previous win media player 9

trying to remove windows media player 10, so I can install with .executable file the previous version 9. I go to add remove programs/add remove win components (i have xp), and uncheck win media player 10. Then I find the program still on the machine when I click on a .wmv file. So I go to win explorer to crogram files/wmp10 and try to delete the folder. It tells me another person or program is using wmp, so cannot delete. What gives?
