    looking for some help
looking at some website lateley i think i read something about an alternative to ribbon cables that gives a higher transfer rate but can find the site again

being half asleep at the time i can remember if they were allreadey made or something they were going to try can they be bought now?

As long as you dnt use the cable for more than one component it shouldn't effect the performance much!

I dont think there is... Just zip tie your ribbon cables so they are kind of like the new round ide cables and that will give you better airflow!

I think your refering to the new 'click and go' type often found with the new Power Supplies, you just clip in the cables you need for power rather than having one power lead with 15 ends on it you dont use lol. However I have read up about the difference between the 40 and 80 wire Ribbon cables, the 80 wire cables are needed for the faster data flow that occurs in the newer ATA100+ drives, they use the seperation to reduce "ringing" accross the wires which would otherwise cause corruption on your drive. I used to have a rounded IDE cable on my hard drive and i completely blame it for all the problems i was having with corrupt files being found by CHKDSK. since going back to the flat ribon cable i havent had this problem, and neither is it a problem with airflow because all i did was move my HD into a more alligned position with the cable and simply folded the excess cable over then at 45 degrees for it to sit on the MB, you can hardly see the cable now and it certainly doesnt get in the way of airflow. By all means use a rounded IDE cable for CDROMS as they run much slower than HD and shouldnt suffer data corruption from a round cable ( i use a round cable for my DVD WR/Rom and CD WR in a position that allows the master and slave plugs to sit above each other then the cable is nicely sloted behind the gap between MB and case then down to the IDE slot :) )

All but the old UDMA2 (33MB/sec) should be on the new 80 wire cables (80-wire cables have the same 40pin connectors as the old style cables but twice as many wires, the extra 40wires are grounds that help protect the cable from interference) - that means 66MB/sec and up.
. Now I use only 80-wire cables and set all drives to Cable Select unless there is some very compelling reason to do otherwise. With Cable Select, the drive you want to be Primary (Master) goes on the end of the cable and the blue connector on the cable goes to the mobo.
